Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer
Rimmer, M; Reed, A.
Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Embryonic development and larval stages of Steindachneridion parahybae (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae): implications for the conservation and rearing of this endangered Neotropical species Neotropical Ichthyology
Honji,Renato M.; Tolussi,Carlos E.; Mello,Paulo H.; Caneppele,Danilo; Moreira,Renata G..
Steindachneridion parahybae is a freshwater catfish endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River and is classified as an endangered Neotropical species. An increasing number of conservation biologists are incorporating morphological and physiological research data to help conservation managers in rescue these endangered species. This study investigated the embryonic and larval development of S. parahybae in captivity, with emphasis in major events during the ontogeny of S. parahybae. Broodstocks were artificially induced to reproduce, and the extrusion occurred 200-255 degree-hours after hormonal induction at 24°C. Larval ontogeny was evaluated every 10 minutes under microscopic/stereomicroscopic using fresh eggs samples. The main embryogenic development stages...

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Essential Fatty Acid Assimilation and Synthesis in Larvae of the Bivalve Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Da Costa Gonzalez, Fiz; Robert, Rene; Quere, Claudie; Wikfors, Gary H.; Soudant, Philippe.
Essential fatty acids (EFA) are important for bivalve larval survival and growth. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess for the first time through a mass-balance approach dietary EFA incorporation and synthesis within Crassostrea gigas larvae. A first experiment was carried out using two microalgae, Tisochrysis lutea (T) and Chaetoceros neogracile (Cg), as mono- and bi-specific diets. A second experiment using a similar design was performed to confirm and extend the results obtained in the first. Flow-through larval rearing was used for accurate control of food supply and measurement of ingestion. Non-methylene-interrupted fatty acids were synthetized from precursors supplied in the diet: 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9, mediated by Delta 5...

ArchiMer
Charlon, Nicole.
The problem of the clogging up of sea water pipes by Mytilus edulis larvae is a very real problem. A study has been made of the ways to destroy these larvae, (1) by electricity (publication in preparation), (2) by ultrasound. This last technique has given interesting data, but exploitation of results on a large scale presents many difficulties. An interesting general phenomenon is to be underlined. For ultrasound treatments of short duration (10s), many larvae are simply stressed and recover later on. For longer treatments, there is actual dislocation of the larvae and instant mortality, this mortality increases with time.

Boudry, Pierre.
Genetic consequences of production of Pacific oyster larval in hatchery: drift and selective pressures related to rearing practices. In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors were examined: the effects of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and temperature effects. A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of the larval population. The results show that high polymorphic microsatellite-based family assignment is a powerful tool for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Culling by selective sieving is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale, but also represents a substantial risk for diversity loss if parentage assignment is not introduced as a...

Etude experimentale de la maturation ovocytaire chez Pecten maximus et Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Widowati, L; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dorange, G; Le Pennec, M.
To date, it has been impossible to fertilize the oocytes of ripe Pecten maximus obtained by gonad stripping as it is routinely done in hatchery with Crassostrea gigas . The events occurring between artificial induction of spawning and normal fertilization were studied experimentally in order to explain this difference. Fertilization and rearing trials were performed on oocytes obtained from the gonads of both species by scarification, by aspiration from genital ducts (of P. maximus only) and after spawning. Every batch of oocytes was fixed for histological study. Serial sections of the gonad of a fixed spawning P. maximus were made to reveal modifications of the nucleus of the oocytes during their expulsion. In P. maximus the stripped oocytes can be...

Etudes sur les mortalites larvaires de la coquille st Jacques Pecten maximus en ecloserie ArchiMer
Robert, Rene; Miner, Philippe; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Mazuret, Michel; Connan, Jean-paul.
Larval mortalities occurring in molluscan hatcheries have often been associated with bacterial contamination. Although batches of oyster and clam larvae have been routinely reared in the hatchery of Argenton without antibiotics, high larval mortalities have been recorded with Pecten maxirnus under similar conditions. For this species, an addition of chloramphenicol was found necessary. However, this chemical has now been banned in Europe. Thus either substitition products or an improvement in the rearing procedures is essential. Studies carried out have shown that neither a decrease in larval density (1 larvae. ml"l) nor sea water change frequency (1 per day) had any positive effects. Furthermore, elective substances such as sugars were not suitable and...

Evaluation of a European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) post-larval tagging method with ultra-small RFID tags ArchiMer
Faggion, Sara; Sanchez, Pierre; Vandeputte, Marc; Clota, Frederic; Vergnet, Alain; Blanc, Marie-odile; Allal, Francois.
Individual tagging is key to a better understanding of early life stages in fish. Very small RFID transponder microchips (500 × 500 × 100 μm, 82 μg) are now available. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol to tag European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) larvae from 61 days post-hatching (dph; standard length ~10 mm) to 96 dph (standard length ~28 mm) through intra-coelomic implantation of microchips. The suitability of such a tagging procedure was evaluated, with the purpose of determining the minimal fish age and body size for microchip tagging without adverse effects on survival and growth performance. We produced an experimental population composed by 50:50 normally pigmented larvae and albino larvae through artificial fertilization. Five...

Microplastics are present in marine habitats worldwide and may be ingested by low trophic organisms such as fish larvae, with uncertain physiological consequences. The present study aims at assessing the impact of polyethylene (PE 10-45µM) microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Fish were fed an inert diet including 0, 104 and 105 fluorescent microbeads per gram from 7 until 43 days post-hatching (dph). Microbeads were detected in the gastrointestinal tract in all fish fed diet incorporating PE. Our data revealed an efficient elimination of PE beads from the gut since no fluorescent was observed in the larvae after 48h depuration. While the mortality rate increased significantly with the amount of microbeads scored per...

Evolutionary side-steps Naturalis
Sluys, Ronald.
Many of the lower metazoans reach adulthood via complex developmental stages. Each of these stages is described with a specialized terminology, which is different for every major group of organisms. Biologists with a proper training in biodiversity may have learned about these complex issues during their undergraduate days, but many of us do no longer encounter the intricacies of lower metazoan development in later stages of our careers. We may be familiar with the ontogenetic stages in the group on which we specialize, but only a few will have practical knowledge and an overview of the larval stages in such groups as crustaceans, echinoderms, polychaetes, sipunculans, molluscs, flatworms, bryozans, and nemertines. Donald Williamson certainly belongs to...

Export of deep-sea hydrothermal particles, indigenous thermophilic microorganisms and larvae to the surrounding Ocean ArchiMer
Lesongeur, Francoise; Briand, Patrick; Godfroy, Anne; Crassous, Philippe; Byrne, Nathalie; Khripounoff, Alexis.
To assess the production and the export of particulate and biological material in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, four moorings with sediment traps and current meters were deployed for 24 days in the Azores Triple Junction (ATJ) region. They were deployed along an axis starting at the base of a hydrothermal vent chimney and ending 1000 m away. The particles sampled at the base of the chimney were characterized by high concentrations in total sulfur (16%) and iron (4%). The particle composition changed drastically with distance from the vent: the sulfur concentration decreased with an increase in clay components. Thermophilic microorganisms were successfully enriched from all the particle samples. Cultured strains were closely related to hydrothermal species,...

Expression of candidate genes related to metabolism, immunity and cellular stress during massive mortality in the American oyster Crassostrea virginica larvae in relation to biochemical and physiological parameters ArchiMer
Genard, Bertrand; Moraga, Dario; Pernet, Fabrice; David, Elise; Boudry, Pierre; Tremblay, Rejean.
Quantification of mRNA of genes related to metabolism, immunity and cellular stress was examined in relation to a massive mortality event during the culture of American oyster larvae, Crassostrea virginica which was probably, in regard to previous microbiological analysis, induced by vibrio infection. To document molecular changes associated with the mortality event, mRNA levels were compared to biochemical and physiological data, previously described in a companion paper. Among the 18 genes studied, comparatively to the antibiotic control, 10 showed a lower relative gene expression when the massive mortality occurred. Six of them are presumed to be related to metabolism, corroborating the metabolic depression associated with the mortality event suggested...

Fantastically plastic: fish larvae equipped for a new world ArchiMer
Pittman, Karin; Yufera, Manuel; Pavlidis, Michail; Geffen, Audrey J.; Koven, Willian; Ribeiro, Laura; Zambonino, Jose Luiz; Tandler, Amos.
Teleost fish are more diverse than any other vertebrate group, and yet only a limited number of species are fished and farmed globally. Efforts to expand the quantity and diversity of fish produced are hampered by the extreme diversity of ontogenetic responses of fish, especially during larval development. This review looks at advances in molecular phylogeny, endocrine and nutrient influences and long-term studies of the phenotypes of commercially important fish to put the sources and consequences of this plasticity into context. This nested context of evolutionary forces of the fish-specific genome duplication, epigenetic influences, ontogenetically conserved processes like metamorphosis and cell determination is further presented in relation to how fish...

Further observations on zooplankton of the Potengi Estuary (Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) with special reference to the larvae of Brachyura (Crustacea, Decapoda) Zoologia
Sankarankutty,C; Oliveira,J.E. Lins; Cunha,K.M.F; Silva,A.C.C; Barroca,E.V.G.
The present paper deals with data on zooplankton collected from the estuary of Potengi, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil covering a period of one year from October 1992 to October 1993. Three fixed stations within the estuary located at varying distances from the mouth of the river were sampled. Sampling was done monthly when the tide was lowest. Analysis of the samples has shown clear pattern of seasonal variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton components which are composed of Copepoda, Appendicularia, larvae of Brachyura, larvae of Cirripedia and Chaetognalha. A detailed study of the larvae of Brachyura was also attempted which showed that seven species can be identified in the samples, of which those of Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards) and...

Garlic essential oil increases rates of eggs fertilization and hatching of Rhamdia quelen larvae in an artificial incubation system Ciência Rural
Marengoni,Nilton Garcia; Pereira,Letícia Angélica; Weiss,Luciane Aline; Besen,Mateus Antonio; Bombardelli,Robie Allan.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of garlic (Allium sativum) essential oil on the rates of eggs fertilization and hatching and on the normal development of larvae of artificially incubated silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The experiment was carried out using a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments and five replicates. The treatments consisted of introducing garlic essential oil into the incubators, which used a closed system of water recirculation, at concentrations of 0, 1, 3, and 5mg L-1. Rates of eggs fertilization and larval hatching were determined at 10 and 24h after the beginning of eggs hydration. Morphology of larvae was assessed with the aid of a stereo microscope to determine the rate of...
